You have to be in the know to get into true speakeasies and locating Here Nor There took some searching. Here Nor There is a semi-private craft cocktail lounge in Downtown Austin. There are 2 ways to gain admission: 1) become a member for annual fee or 2) book a reservation on the Here Nor There’s dedicated mobile app. Intrigued by the old school and electronic exclusivity, we locked in seats weeks before our trips.
Our Uber dropped us off at 612 Brazos Street, which according to the confirmation email, was the exact address of the bar. There was a glass door entrance to a generic commercial building with a keypad on the wall. Following the emailed instructions, we punched in that night’s password, but nothing happened. We tried again and again, but still no success. Confused, we looked for another potential door and saw a black gate down a small alley around the corner. There were other people looking lost, so we knew we were in the right vicinity, and low and behold, there was a keypad on the gate.
Once inside Here Nor There, we were greeted by a taxidermied bear and a living human host with 2 flutes of complimentary champagne. This was a great first impression as we’ve never received drinks before the drinks. But to Liz’s disappointment, we were told that photography wasn’t allowed inside in the bar. The space itself wasn’t that big, maybe comfortably seating 50 to 55 people. It was dark, intimate, and intricately designed, making it an ideal place for all the couples there that night. There was a dim alcove where antique plates from all over the world decorated the walls. The main room’s ceiling featured hand blown glass light fixtures from the Czech Republic.
Here Nor There’s cocktail menu aimed to explore global flavors, making it interesting to read over all the unique ingredients. The cocktails ranged between $15-$17 for a drink, which isn’t a surprise for a premium drink establishment. Liz opted for Here Nor There’ most popular drink, the Milk & Honey, which was served in a tea cup and dried piece of pineapple. Supposedly it took 5 years to create the Milk & Honey, as the bar’s founders wanted every ingredient to perfect. It was so good that Liz had to break the rules and snap a photo.
Definitely stop by Here Nor There for a evening cocktail. It’s located in 612 Brazos Street in Downtown Austin, but be sure to make a reservation on its mobile app.
