Madrid, the capital city of Spain, serves as the launchpad for my first ever solo international trip. A classic metropolis where the royals of the Spanish Empire used to reign supreme, Madrid maintains an old world romance that’s very welcoming. The streets and buildings date back centuries, but don’t look a day over a millennium. It blows my mind when I walk on history and the Spanish treat a a few thousand years as a blip on their timeline.
Bars and restaurants clamor throughout the day, as patrons enjoy their elongated siestas, a concept that intrigued. Work stops for several hours during the afternoon freeing people to live life. Interesting concept, but it really threw me off my eating schedule. Tapas dishes decorated tables and bars, but it’s hard to enjoy them being a lone traveler. However, the jamon serrano is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.
