Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover had a major hit in “Redbone,” the featured single off of his critically acclaimed Awaken, My Love! album. The funkadelic song touches on paranoia and infidelity in a relationship as Childish Gambino croons in a falsetto tone. “Redbone” is one of the best songs of the 2017, which is a testament to the amount of detail in the track.
Donald Glover joined forces with frequent collaborator Swedish composer/ producer Ludwig Göransson to produce “Redbone” and several other songs on Awaken, My Love! Genius met with Göransson to deconstruct and document the process.
“We were just chilling and then Donald started playing drums,” he tells Genius. “He was like, ‘I have this beat. Let’s just play this drum beat.’ We had all the instruments spread out in the whole room, in the whole studio, and just went from one to another to another, hearing ideas and basically just recording a bunch of tracks on top of each other. That was kind of the seed of the idea, that was sort of the first of ‘Redbone’ kind of started.”
A number of instruments, impressively played by Göransson, were used for the track and were deeply layered and sequenced. It’s a refreshing deviation from the drum machines and Fruity Loops hip hop beats at the moment, bringing back some creative artistry.
