DJ Khaled has single handily done what many brands have failed to do: leverage Snapchat as an effective marketing tool. As the fastest growing social media platform growing 57% this past year, Snapchat has accumulated over 200 million monthly active users since launching in 2011. Additionally, it has the most engaged audience with over 400 million snaps created daily and 71% of its users are below 35 years old. These are mouthwatering figures to companies looking to reach the valuable Gen Z/ Millennial demographic. However, most brands are still trying to figure out how to build its fan base and lift brand value off Snapchat.

IN LIFE EVERYONE HAS A CHOICE.THE KEY IS: MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE

DJ Khaled, on the other hand, has become Snapchat’s biggest superstar since joining the platform only two months ago in October. For those unfamiliar, Khaled is a DJ, music producer, record label CEO, restaurateur, and sneaker head. Even though he doesn’t rap, Khaled has orchestrated some of the biggest anthems in hip-hop (e.g. “All I Do is Win, “We Takin’ Over”, “I’m On One”). Most of all, his larger than life personality has made him one of the most captivating figures in music. It only made sense that DJ Khaled eventually joined Snapchat.

At 40 years old, DJ Khaled falls outside of Snapchat’s core user base, but he has ingeniously mastered the social channel in a short period of time. To build a social following, one must produce content that entertains, enlightens, or inspires, and Khaled does so in his own distinct way. Fans can live a day in the life of DJ Khaled through Snapchat, as he dines on his egg white and chicken sausage breakfast prepared by his personal chef, to him watering his lush garden, then either relaxing with him in his hammock, riding shotgun as he jet skiis around his waterfront Miami home, or visiting his famous friends like Rick Ross. However, the things that keep people tuned in are the keys of success he drops throughout the day. These tidbits of wisdom are highly enlightening and entertaining at the same time, and have helped him garner a huge Snapchat following.

“The thing is that what you see on Snapchat, that’s DJ Khaled. That’s Khaled for real. That’s Khaled. My fans are seeing me besides my records and music videos and interviews. They’re seeing a more spiritual and at the same time motivational and inspirational side of me being at home,” said DJ Khaled in an interview with Tech Insider.

DJ Khaled gets 2 millions views per snap. That’s pure, unpaid, organic impressions. Companies pray for reach like that. Each 10-second snap could be valuable advertising spot to reach Millennial and Gen Z consumers, but Khaled only occasionally hawks product on his Snapchat. Instead he focuses on providing genuine content that people love, and by doing so, he’s probably gained as much fans as he did through his music. I’m sure there are tons of people who follow him who never heard a DJ Khaled song in their life. He has shown that to be effective on Snapchat, you have to provide value to your followers by entertaining, enlightening, or inspiring them. That what brands need to do win.
